about us

Zen meditation trains us to clear our minds and open our hearts by means of several kinds of formal practice--sitting, chanting, bowing, and walking meditation. It is open to those of any religious affiliation or those with none. As we continue to let go of our thinking, analytical minds and come back to what is right in front of us, a sense of peace and wisdom begin to pervade our lives. At Lincoln Park Zen, you can join us in this wonderful practice throughout the week, please see our schedule and calendar for more details.

The Kwan Um School of Zen (KUSZ) is a form of Korean Zen. It was founded by the late Zen Master Seung Sahn, who brought the teaching to the United States in the early 1970's. Ten Directions Zen Community is the Sangha of the KUSZ in the greater Chicago area, and is comprised of groups in Woodstock, Wheaton, and Hobart (Indiana), as well as Lincoln Park Zen in the city of Chicago. Our guiding teacher is Zen Master Seong Hyang (Barbara Rhodes), who was one of Zen Master Seung Sahn's first students. To learn more about the KUSZ, the teachings of our teachers and the various forms of our practice, please visit the Kwan Um School of Zen website. For links to other groups in the greater Chicago area, please visit the contact page.

In addition to our regular practice and special events in Lincoln Park, the Ten Directions Zen Community offers many opportunities. For information on retreats, days of meditation, kido chanting and other events, please visit the Ten Directions website.

We would like to thank DePaul University Ministry for making this wonderful space available for our practice. Your generosity is deeply appreciated by all of us at Lincoln Park Zen.
